Yesterday, the Institute of Culture for Ruthenians in Vojvodina, in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Belgrade and Jagiellonian University in Krakow, organized a well-attended promotion of the monograph titled “Wojwodina i jej Rusini: O języku, kulturze i historii Rusinów wojwodińskich” by Dr. Tomaš Kwoka.
At the event, journalist Dr. Boris Varga, Dr. Aleksander Mudri from the Department for Ruthenian Studies (Faculty of Philosophy, Novi Sad), foreign lecturer from Slavic Studies Mr. Miloš Valigurski, comic book author Aleksandar Zograf (book cover designer), director of the Institute Saša Sabadoš and the author of the monograph Dr. Tomaš Kwoka, discussed the book.
The monograph talks about the phenomenon of Ruthenians from Bačka and Srem, their language, culture, tradition, and identity, as well as institutional frames in which they sustained their culture and emancipated as a minority. Since the author is a philologist, the emphasis of the book is on the language politics in Yugoslavia/Serbia/Vojvodina, which enabled its continuity, unlike countries in Middle and Eastern Europe. The book also discusses alternative Ruthenian culture, and modern art, which is an unusual subject in publications.
